There’s something you are great at. Do you know what it is?
Well, you should figure it out, because knowing your sweet spot—your “superpower”—is the key to building a better business.
But a lot of people I help don’t know what their superpower is! They don’t know what that one thing is that so fits their personality and skills that they can really excel at it.
So, one of the first things I do with new clients is spend time determining exactly what their sweet spot is.
There are a number of steps I go through in that process. In today’s article, I’m going to take you through step one—determining your true work style.
Your Workstyle
What’s a work style? It is the way you work best—the way you prefer to do things, how you approach tasks, and the manner in which you interact with others.
And your workstyle will lay the foundation for your superpower. That’s because your superpower is largely determined by the type of workstyle you have. So, understanding what your superpower is begins by first understanding yourself, and the way you prefer to work.
Knowing your work style allows you to identify your true strengths and weaknesses, and that in turn allows you to:
- Understand how to market yourself to others;
- Recognize what you need to succeed;
- See more clearly situations you thrive in, and situations you struggle with;
- Know what other work styles you need to access, to cover off your weaknesses.
When I begin working with a new client, I always start by having them do an exercise that tells them what their own work style is. It not only helps them understand themselves better, and why they do the things they do, it also helps me understand them. It gives me the foundation on which to help them discover what their own superpower is.
And the tool I use to determine their work style is the PAVF.
What’s the PAVF?
The PAVF is a short questionnaire that you complete on your own. It consists of 10 questions (yes, just 10!) that ask you to rate yourself on a variety of characteristics. Once completed, the totals you get tell you what your dominant work style is, as well as your secondary work style.
That, in turn, tells you a whole lot! We’ll go more into that in next week’s article. But first, let’s do the PAVF.
