Free Agency. It’s not just for sports professionals!
The world of work is changing quickly. Advantage goes to those who truly understand how and where they add the most value — and how to extract their true value in return.
That, in a nutshell, is the essence of being a high functioning Free Agent. True in sports. True in business. True in excelling in any organizational and work context.
Here’s what Wikipedia states: “In professional sports, a free agent is a player who is eligible to sign freely with any club or franchise; i.e., not under contract to any specific team. The term is also used in reference to a player who is under contract at present but who is allowed to solicit offers from other teams.” Well, that kind of sounds like our modern work world, doesn’t it? So start thinking about yourself as a Free Agent, and get clear on what YOU WANT.
Here’s my own personal experience in how being a Free Agent stacks up against being a traditional employee.
And being a Free Agent in the working world doesn’t mean you have to be self-employed; you can still sign on as a traditional employee, if that’s what YOU want. It sure is nice to have options, though!
What Free Agency is actually about is a state of mind — the mindset that YOU are in control.
That you, and you alone, are responsible for your career development, progression, and ultimate satisfaction. The Free Agent mindset is a mindset of both privilege and responsibility. You can’t outsource your career development. You can’t outsource your career security.
That’s pretty much how being a Free Agent works in the modern world. Confident in your own capabilities. Committed to your excellence. Constantly sense-making and upskilling to optimize your opportunities, and securing and delivering your most purposeful work. Gaining the acclaim of your customers.
Imagine taking full control, and:
- being able to design your own job descriptions or work gigs, to best match how you choose to invest your efforts
- negotiating effectively for those things that are truly important to you;
- designing your own professional life, and nudging it into existence, step by step.
It’s all very do-able. Learn exactly how to do it in our Free Agent Bootcamp. All in 8 short weeks.
This is a different approach. You have us focus on our overall career, not a specific job. That way, rather than trying to fit into someone else’s boxes, I get to figure out the shape I want to be and offer that out to the world. The end result brought me together as a complete picture, that focuses on a tight long range vision for myself. Very powerful stuff! [M.B.C.]
